WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE TO SIGN OUR PETITION as the first step in destroying this tradition of death, when there is a clear and proven answer that gives life.
Then, to save these innocent animals' lives we need people to agree to be a line of defense against death for these animals: join the Adoption Backup List.
What this list says is, "please contact me before you kill an animal simply because you do not have room for him or her." It does not obligate you at this time but this is the network, the infrastructure, that we must build to save these animal's lives.
As soon as possible, the city must have a new website for adoptions (there are many problems with the current system) and this site needs a "Save Me" button by every animal's photo.
This means, if no one adopts this particular pet before he or she would be killed/murdered, that you agree to save his or her life and adopt him or her yourself. This will be our first line of defense and the above list will be our back-up.
It's time for reform. It's time for compassion. It's time to be animal's best friend for a change. Take a stand and save thousands and thousands of animal's lives (Warning: Graphic Image). Image is not accurate for Memphis, per se. In Memphis, the animals are first killed by lethal injection, then they are put in large wheelbarrow devices and put into a freezer. From there they are taken to be incinerated. And what was their great sin? They said, "I love you."
I was speaking to someone about my conversations with the Mayor of Memphis and right after that conversation I opened my Bible up to:
Jeremiah 44:4 'Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, "Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate."
That was God saying He hates this murdering of animals and He considers it an abomination and that He sent me to the leaders to let them know that, so they would change their wicked ways.
"I Cried Tear Drops Over The Massive Attack." That's a line from "Writen In The Stars" and it applies here.
That's less than a 1% improvement over 2010. The national average for a kill shelter is 50% and No Kills kill only 10% - 20% of their animals.
Only a fool would think we could continue the same practice and improve to anywhere near the level of saving lives that No Kills do. We need and demand a No Kill Shelter with a No Kill leader at the helm, like Reno with their administrator / director.
5. Use the "Share" links at the top of this page to email this page and share this web address with everyone you know, in the Memphis area, who does not want animals to be killed needlessly by our shelter.
Did you know that there is not a pet overpopulation problem? The problem is that we are breeding animals to replace the animals we kill. They are not being adopted because we have not taken the first step: our city has not committed to a No Kill. No Kill Memphis, with your help, is going to change that.
Only about 20% of people's pets are adopted from traditional animal shelters and the rest are purchased from breeders and other sources. By increasing the adoption ratio by just a few percentage points, we no longer need to kill for population control.**
The plan:
The plan is to use what has been proven to work in other cities. Look at Reno Nevada (about them). Reno has about the same amount of intakes as Memphis but it saves 90% of its animals compared with the Memphis Animal Shelter that saves just 23.34% of its animals. Memphis now has no excuse.
So, we do not need to reinvent the wheel since we have No Kill Shelters that work. We use their proven formula, The No Kill Equation, and we
This is a common sense approach to saving lives that includes increasing adoptions and low cost and free spay neuter programs for the poor. You don't penalize the poor for what they can't afford (this also does not effect vet's incomes since the poor are not their customers for this service).
We are setting up a 501(c)3 for donations (In progress and needing your donations: The Boone Foundation). This soon to be tax deductible entity helps to fund the No Kill. (Please don't wait till we have the tax deductible status to donate). *100% of the funds received go to creating and maintaining a Memphis No Kill Shelter. We also will apply and get grants from Maddie's Fund and other sources and get donations from businesses. We partner with TV and radio stations and businesses for events, like adoption events at Petco and PetSmart, for example.
By committing to a No Kill, as I have done, we will get help on a scale that we've never had. When we save lives and do not kill even one animal that is not suffering and unable to be saved, or too vicious to live, we will see the flood gates of compassion open, shown by people donating their time serving and offering professional services and opening up their pocketbooks. And, don't wait to help. There are animals there now who need you.
For the animals that get lost or abandoned, in Memphis 11,127 companion animals were killed of 15,404 intakes. That's 76.66% of te intakes killed in 2011 (253 died). The national average is 50%. We have a killing field on our hands Memphis.
After we get our No Kill going, those animals (as the Bible puts it) get garland instead of ashes (when killed they end up incinerated) and 90% and more will live. What once was a curse now becomes a blessing. What once was the animal going from an irresponsible owner to death, now has him living and being adopted by a great family.
Do not email Matthew Pepper, as the end of the video states, as he has resigned, but sign No Kill Petition, instead.
